Gay couples rush to get married in California

By LISA LEFF, Associated Press Writer 32 minutes ago

County clerk offices across California opened for their first full day of same-sex marriages Tuesday, with hundreds of happy gay and lesbian couples ready to take the plunge in what in some cities was a party atmosphere.

A gay men's chorus was singing on the front steps of San Francisco City Hall, brighten up by rainbow flags and supporters handing out cupcakes to happy couples.

Helen Zia and Lia Shigemura sang "The Chapel of Love" as they walked to the city attorney's office to get married. The couple, clad in beige jackets and slacks, exchanged vows with Zia's mother by their side.

"This is the most meaningful day of my life. I've always wanted to get married," Shigemura said. "I just never thought it'd be possible."

From San Diego to Eureka, couples readied their formal wear, local licensing clerks expanded their staffs and conservative groups warned of a backlash as the nation's most populous state joined Massachusetts in sanctioning gay unions.

Some couples were from out of state. Unlike Massachusetts, which legalized same-sex marriage in 2004, California has no residency requirement for marriage licenses.

The May 15 California Supreme Court ruling that overturned the state's bans on same-sex marriage became final at 5:01 p.m. Monday, and clerks in at least five counties extended their hours to mark the occasion.

Already, dozens of same-sex couples have seized the opportunity to make their relationships official in the eyes of the law.

In West Hollywood more than 100 people, wearing everything from T-shirts to tuxedoes, were in line when City Hall opened for business at 9 a.m. Six white cabanas with chandeliers and silk flowers were ready for weddings.

Among those getting marriage licenses were actor and gay rights activist George Takei and his longtime partner, Brad Altman; they are planning a September wedding.

"Today we are all here to give flesh and blood reality to that ruling. We are going to make history," said Takei, who played Sulu in the "Star Trek" television series and movies. "Congratulations to all of us and may equality live long and prosper."

Every county was required to start issuing new gender-neutral marriage licenses Tuesday with spaces for "Party A" and "Party B" where "bride" and "groom" used to be.

"Am I Party A or Party B?" Contra Costa County Clerk Stephen Weir jokingly asked his partner of 18 years, John Hemm.

They were the first to marry at Weir's office Tuesday morning. Outside, three opponents of gay marriage from the Westboro Baptist Church picketed, carrying signs with sayings such as "God is your enemy."

Members of the sect are most often seen at military funerals in demonstrations claiming U.S. combat deaths are God's punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.

The protesters were easily outnumbered by about three dozen supporters of gay marriage, who held signs that read "Hate is not a family value" and "My marriage is not threatened by theirs, why is yours?" Police vehicles lined up near the demonstrators.

On Monday, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who helped start the series of lawsuits that led the court to strike down California's one-man-one-woman marriage laws, presided at the wedding of Del Martin, 87, and Phyllis Lyon, 83.

Newsom picked the couple for the only ceremony Monday in City Hall to recognize their 55-year relationship and their status as pioneers of the gay rights movement. More than 650 same-sex couples have made appointments to get marriage licenses in San Francisco before the end of the month.

Newsom called officiating the wedding "this extraordinary and humbling gift." After the mayor pronounced Martin and Lyon "spouses for life," the couple kissed, then emerged to a crowd of well-wishers who showered them with rose petals.

The celebrations are tempered by the reality that in a few months, Californians will go to the ballot box to vote on an initiative that would overturn the high court ruling and again ban gay marriage.

On Monday, three lawmakers and a small group of other same-sex-marriage opponents gathered outside the Capitol to criticize the Supreme Court decision. They urged voters to approve the ballot measure.

"This is an opportunity to take back a little bit of dignity ... for kids, for all of us in California," Republican Assemblyman Doug LaMalfa said. "It really disturbs me that the will of the people was overridden by four members of the Supreme Court."

In both San Francisco and Beverly Hills, where two women became the first same-sex couple in Los Angeles County to marry legally, small groups of protesters waved signs with sayings like "Repent or Perish." They were outnumbered by supporters waving rainbow-striped flags.

Groups that oppose same-sex marriage have pursued several legal avenues to stop the weddings. On Monday, just hours before the ruling went into effect, a conservative legal group asked a Sacramento court to order the California agency that oversees marriages to stop issuing gender-neutral marriage licenses.

A hearing was set for Tuesday.

About two dozen protesters gathered across the street from the Sacramento County clerk's office in the morning, carrying signs that read, "Marriage 1 man + 1 woman" and "Resist Judicial Tyranny."

Juliya Lyubezhanina, 16, came to protest with about 10 other teens from the Slavic Trinity Church.

"They claim to be Christians, but they apparently just don't read the Bible because it's all in there," she said. "It's something to just pray about. It's not a time to be joyful."

A UCLA study issued last week estimated that if the ballot measure is rejected, half of California's more than 100,000 same-sex couples will get married over the next three years, and 68,000 out-of-state couples will travel here to exchange vows.

AND SUCCESSFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tidings of great joy from Melissa's husband Chris:

"Peter Jackson's Production company, Wingnut Films, has contacted us, and they want to make Project Fiver happen in the next year or so.

To quote someone famous: "There is no emoticon for what I am feeling." Apparently your letters of support and our story have really affected them.

We did it, folks. We really did it. There is no variation on "Thank You" that would begin to express the gratitude that I owe all of you. No words can do it justice. This is something incredible that you all have helped me accomplish, that I could never hope to accomplish on my own. Melissa is just over the moon about the whole thing, it still seems like a dream.

Want to know the funny part? The first thing the guy does is apologize that they weren't in contact sooner.

SOONER? This thing has only been live for three months! This was still Phase 2 of the Project (getting a metric buttload of signatures). I figured that once we had a huge number (5000 was my ballpark figure), we would launch Phase 3 - Direct contact. By then our geek social network would likely have made contact with someone inside, who could put the petition in the right hands. And with 5000 signatures it would be taken seriously. And I had planned a timeframe of collecting this many signatures through this fall. I was considering reserving a Fan Table at DragonCon as one last push.

I expected this to take six months to lay the GROUNDWORK, and he is apologizing for waiting three months to contact us!

Apparently, I had wildly under-estimated the power of Geek Social Networking. 4200 signatures in Three Months and enough letters and emails written to convince Wingnut Films to make this a reality. The outpouring of concern is just amazing.

But this is not the end of the story. It is a beginning. PROJECT FIVER will continue. We now are on the road to the goal, and the journey has yet to be written. Filming will not begin until sometime next year. Our mission is the same: To have Melissa be a Hobbit extra in the film. We now have the company's support, but it will still be a hard road to get her there in a year. We don't know what kind of shape Melissa will be in by the time Filming starts. It will be a fight, but we will be fighting together.

Project Fiver will continue. This site will change over the next month. The Petition will be closed, and a Guestbook will be created for people to check in and send well-wishes and greetings to her. Our son, Matthew, will have this, to know how his mother lived. The Blog will continue, and we will try to use the attention we have garnered here to promote ALS Awareness and support for the ALS Association of Georgia, who has been so very good to us in our time of need.

So thank you from me, from Melissa and from our family. You have accomplished something truly incredible. Now it is our turn to rise to the challenge of it."

Again, I can't thank you all enough for your support of Melissa. It really is amazing. With all the crap going on in the world, to see such a tangible outpouring of goodwill just makes this old gnome's heart swell...

My thank you letter will be going out in the next couple days, if you are so inspired, the address is:

Hey all, I'd like to ask everyone to take a minute, read this story and then please sign the petition. If my journal brings you any kind of joy or amusement, I would ask this simple favor in return. It takes no effort and could potentially bring some joy into the life of a wonderful woman facing a terminal illness. It's currently at 3200 signatures and with just the people who read my journal we could easily push this to over 4000. So please, click the link and sign the petition. It would mean so much to Melissa and her family. Please reply here if you sign, I woulld love to show Melissa and her family how many caring folks my friends list is made of. Thank you all in advance. -Joe

The Website: http://projectfiver.com/

Melissa "Fiver" Kern has been a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien since she read The Hobbit as a child, and has always loved books. Her heart leaped when she saw the preview for Peter Jackson’s film adaptations of Lord of the Rings, and she has been involved in organizing like-minded "Ringers" in the Southeast for many years now.

The hard truth is that Melissa has just been diagnosed with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Essentially, it causes all the motor neurons in the brain to shut down, gradually making the muscles unable to function. It’s very rare (1 in 1 Million) for someone who’s only 34 years old to come down with this, as it mainly affects people between 50 and 70. Life expectancy is 3-5 years from diagnosis, and there is no cure. (She’s had the disease for about a year already.) The disease progressively takes away movement and coordination. In September, she marched with fellow LotR fans in the annual DragonCon parade. Six months later, she is barely walking, and needs my help to climb stairs or get dressed. We have a son, Matthew, who just turned six.

She is excited about the filming of "The Hobbit" sequels, but was apprehensive about the release dates of 2010 and 2011: She doesn’t even know if she’ll still be alive when these movies are released. I told her to make that her goal : to be around to see these films in the theater. But we don’t know how this disease will go.

The goal of PROJECT FIVER is to deliver a petition to Peter Jackson, New Line, and whoever takes the Directorship, asking that Melissa be cast as a costumed hobbit extra in the film. Even if she’s not there when the movies are released, just being part of the production of The Hobbit, even if it’s just sitting at a table in the background, will absolutely mean the world to her. It would be her reason to hang on.

Melissa has done an incredible amount to promote Tolkien Fellowship. She has been a key member of the Tolkien Track at DragonCon for several years, and has also volunteered with the Young Adult Literature track there, and helped to plan the Harry Potter Yule Ball and DragonCon's (in)famous Pirate Party. She has been an active member on TheOneRing.net, co-leader of ArmsOfMiddleEarth.com and member of numerous LotR-Related Moots, and Meet-Up groups in the Atlanta area. She has volunteered at Anime Weekend Atlanta for the past two years, and for the Mythic Journeys organization since 2004, and worked PR for the past two conferences. Additionally, she has helped organize local Release Parties for the Harry Potter books and coordinated with movie theaters to have a crew of costumed Pirates raise money for the AMC Stars of Hope Charity at the Pirates of the Caribbean movie premieres.

Many in these groups have been asking what they can do to help her out and lift her spirits, and PROJECT FIVER is my best answer. She did not ask for this. Project FIVER is the community and my wish for her. It would a simple thing for a large production company like New Line (Time Warner) to so this, and we're only asking that she be given an extra's part, just a background Hobbit. (Not a script re-write of the script, inserting her into the storyline.) This is something simple that would mean the world to someone...who means the world to many of us.

Sadness in our family

sad fairy
I got a call today from my youngest son's father earlier today to let me know that his wife's father - my son's step-grandfather but in my mind his grandfather - is in the hospital  and not doing well. He may not make it thru the day or he may turn it around. They really don't know. His body is slowly deteriorating and they aren't sure why. Literally his bones are decaying. He's been in pain for the past year, but this time it's turned for the worst. I was a little upset that my son's father didn't opt to take him because I KNOW my son would want to be there and see his grandfather one last time - if that's the case. I'm still hopeful that he will not pass - but my ex didn't sound so optimistic. His wife, my son's stepmother, and my friend ( yes we've all remained friends thru all of this - we knew each other before he and I split and have considered each other family no matter what )... is on her way there now. She works/lives out of town during the week, so they are both driving in from seperate directions alone. I just pray that God keep them both safe on their way in. I can only imagine what she is feeling now. She's an only child and her parents never divorced. And her poor mother.. oh god. I've met them. When I pick up or drop my son off at holiday gatherings I always see them and say hello and give them hugs. Her parents are very kind and they adore our son. And I can't even begin to think of how I'm going to tell him. He's going to be devestated. He still hasn't gotten over the loss of his grandmother - his fathers mother - and that was almost 4 yrs ago. And now this. I'm numb as I'm writing this. I don't want to go home and tell him. I don't want to see him break down. But I know I have to tell him. His dad is hoping that he might wake up again ( he keeps drifting in and out of sleep) and they can get him on the phone to talk to my son. This just really really sucks...

I know there is a lot going on this weekend - fun festivities and all - and I dont' usually ask for this kind of thing - but if I could ask that you please keep my son, his dad and "Mom" and her parents in your thoughts and prayers I would appreciate it greatly... and me the strength to be able to carry enough strength for me and my 11 yr old.

HELP

I am wondering if anyone knows of a really good pain specialist or chiropractor that they would HIGHLY recommend. I’ve been going on three weeks with what I think is a pinched nerve in my lower back and I am getting to the point that I can’t take it anymore. I’m a contractor, so it has to be a pretty affordable office that does non-insurance / self pay work. I am skeptical about chiro’s because I am under the impression that while they can crack you the right way to fix you, they can also crack you just the right way to have to keep coming back. The pain is excruciating - shooting down my legs - and I just felt like my legs were going to collapse from under me as I was walking back to my desk -  and doesn’t seem to be letting up any time soon. :(

Any suggestions that anyone has for the local Atlanta area would be great. I’ll travel as far south as the city of Atlanta and as far north as the Georgia / Tenn. border. In other words, if I don’t have to drive more than two hours to get there – I’m game!

Do you "heart" me?
Wanna whisper sweet somethings in my ear????

It's a Tin Mans' world...

  • Feb. 7th, 2008 at 3:00 PM
Fek Off
I have come to the realization that there are two types of people in this world... givers and takers... selfish and selfless.. heartless and considerate. Yea.. I know.. not a HUGE shocker to anyone .. not even me. But it still torques my chain...

I just don't understand how some people can just carry on like there is nothing wrong after the fallout of a relationship. How could you lose your right arm and pretend like it didn't happen... or that there isn't a problem. I DON'T UNDERSTAND PEOPLE. And mabye I'm TOO kind for my own good. Maybe I care TOO MUCH for my own good. I'm not saying that people should wallow around in self pity or even wear their breakup like a coat of armor forever.. but geezycreezy... how about SOME compassion?????  Some sign that you ARE actually bothered by what's happened.. some sign that you ARE actually human and that you actually DO give a shit that you have destroyed someone's life and their heart is breaking....

I am all about those relationships ending if they are toxic. If the person leaving has been beaten and abused. Or lied to or cheated on. Broken and destroyed. But NOT if the person they are leaving has done nothing wrong. They followed the rules. Lived by the book. Did everything in their power to make every day "right". I'm not naive enough to know that sometimes relationships just don't work. I get that. But is there really any reason to be heartless about it in the end? Sending those little signals of "You're not worth my time anymore"... or... "my life is better now that YOU"RE not in it".... I mean..what's the point. I can ONLY hope that Karma's dance card isn't full and goes beating down the door of those that deserve it.

I am amazed at how people 'pretend'.. and aren't true to themselves or those around them. POSERS. FRAUD. LIARS. FAKES... whatever you want to call them... I have no use for it.  No one deserves to be put thru hell -- all the vows and promises -- to be tossed aside like an old rag doll.

Maybe I'm just the last of a dying breed...fuck the Tin Man people of the world.. I HAVE A HEART !!!

Thats my rant for the day

.....we now return you to your regularly scheduled life

Ohhhhh So wrong...
